is pleased to present autopoiesis, a group exhibition featuring works by Chuma Adam (b. 2001), Alia Ismail (b. 2002), Thato Makatu (b. 2001), Bulumko Mbete (b. 1995), Andisiwe Mgwintenti (b. 2000), Unathi Mkonto (b. 1982), and Mankebe Seakgoe (b. 1998).
The exhibition borrows its title from a painting series by Adam and adapts the term which refers originally to systems of biological self-production, regeneration and organisation. Here, it becomes a way to consider these emerging artistic practices as forms of self-definition and cultural continuity. Through recursive processes such as weaving, stitching, writing, assembling and excavating, each artist reiterates and reaffirms identity, culture, and meaning in a visual language that is both distinct and precise.
autopoiesis carries on the gallery’s tradition of spotlighting new talents and unrepresented artists in the winter months. The exhibition will coincide with Games of Property, a solo presentation by Vusumzi Nkomo.
